... Read moreIt's surreal to finally share this news! Playing Sebastian in Theatre Agápe’s The Little Mermaid has been an absolute whirlwind, and honestly, a dream come true. When I first got the call, the first thing that popped into my head was, "How do I make 'Under the Sea' sound fresh and exciting every single night?" Sebastian isn't just a character; he's the heart and soul of so many iconic moments, especially the musical ones.
The preparation for this role has been intense but incredibly rewarding. Sebastian's songs, like "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl," are absolute showstoppers, and they demand a lot of vocal energy and character. I've spent countless hours in vocal coaching, not just to hit the notes, but to infuse them with Sebastian's unique personality – his worry, his sass, his unwavering loyalty to King Triton. It’s not just about singing the lines; it's about being Sebastian while singing them, making every "Ariel, listen to me!" resonate with emotion.
One of the biggest challenges, and joys, has been combining the singing with the choreography. Imagine trying to deliver a powerful vocal performance while also moving with the distinct scuttling and gesturing of a crab! It requires a lot of breath control and physical stamina. During rehearsals, there were definitely moments of tripping over my own feet, but seeing it all come together has been amazing. The stage is a dynamic place, and bringing Sebastian's lively energy to every corner, even during the most complex vocal arrangements, is what makes live theatre so special.
Speaking of bringing Sebastian to life, the costume plays a huge role! I remember the first time I put on the full ensemble: the vibrant red shirt, perfectly tailored pants, those distinctive gloves, and of course, the red bowler hat adorned with a small, yet impactful, crab-like accessory. It’s more than just clothes; it instantly transforms you. When I'm wearing it, smiling and posing, ready for the performance, I feel like Sebastian. It helps me embody his cheerful, sometimes exasperated, demeanor. While it looks fantastic, moving and singing in it took some getting used to. You learn how to project your voice even when the hat might slightly muffle sound, or how to gesticulate broadly with the gloves on to convey emotion.
What I love most about playing Sebastian is the chance to connect with the audience, especially the kids, through his songs. There’s nothing quite like seeing their faces light up during "Under the Sea." It's a moment of pure joy and escapism, and as a performer, that energy feeds you. Live theatre offers a unique magic that you can't get from watching a screen. It's an immersive experience where every performance is a little different, alive with the energy of both the cast and the audience.
So, if you've ever wondered what it's like to be Sebastian, singing your heart out and trying to keep a rebellious mermaid out of trouble, let me tell you, it's an adventure! I'm putting my whole heart into making this performance of The Little Mermaid truly memorable for everyone. Come join us at Theatre Agápe for a splash-tastic show filled with iconic songs, laughter, and a whole lot of underwater magic!
