... Read moreWow, what an incredible day at the parade! I mentioned it was my first time really diving into parade photography, especially focusing on people other than my son, and let me tell you, the 'turret girls' were an absolute highlight. These young women, often local pageant queens or community representatives, sit atop these incredibly decorated floats, and many of them are true works of art – like the stunning castle-themed parade floats I saw, complete with golden turrets! It’s such a unique sight and really adds to the festive atmosphere. I was mesmerized watching them. There was one float featuring a 'Junior Miss Autumn on the Dyfore' and another with 'Miss Randolph County Fair Camrie Goshert,' both looking so poised and beautiful in their gowns and crowns. It really makes you appreciate the effort everyone puts into these community events. Capturing their waves and smiles, the way the light hit their sashes – it was a true photographic challenge, but so rewarding! Speaking of photography, if you're ever thinking of trying to capture parade moments, especially moving subjects like these 'turret girls,' here are a few things I learned. First, try to find a spot with good background and lighting. I noticed some fantastic shots were possible when the floats passed by recognizable local spots, like that building with the red and yellow striped roof – which I later realized was near Gino's Pizza & Spaghetti House! It gives the photos a sense of place. Also, don't be afraid to use a faster shutter speed to freeze the action, and keep your eyes peeled for those candid, unposed moments. The vibrant chrysanthemums decorating some of the floats also added such a lovely fall touch that just popped in photos. It wasn't just the 'turret girls' either; the entire parade was a spectacle. From the elegant 'Miss Randolph County' and the future '2025 Miss Oak Leaf Queen Autumn Wooding' waving from their cars, to the more elaborate floats with multiple participants and feathered costumes marching by the 'Big Timber Brewing' tent, there was so much energy. It’s more than just a procession; it’s a celebration of community and tradition. Each wave, each smile, tells a story of local pride. This experience really opened my eyes to how much joy and beauty can be found in local events. It felt great to step out of my comfort zone and photograph something new. I truly hope these photos capture just a fraction of the magic I felt that day. If you get the chance to attend a fall parade, definitely go – and maybe even bring your camera! You never know what beautiful moments, or inspiring 'turret girls,' you might capture.
