Return of the High Places (Church Buildings)

Paragould
2/20 Edited to

... Read moreReflecting on my own church experiences, I’ve noticed a growing focus on the physical church building, which seems to echo the concerns raised in 2 Chronicles 14:5 about the removal of high places. These 'high places' in biblical times often represented distractions from true worship. Today, many young people associate church primarily with attending services within grand structures, sometimes spending significant resources on maintaining or enhancing these buildings. While church buildings can provide a valuable gathering space, I've found that the heart of worship is not tied to any location but to the community and personal relationship with God. In my community, we’ve experimented with home churches and small group gatherings that emphasize fellowship and spiritual growth over physical buildings. This approach often encourages deeper connection and avoids the trap of equating the presence of a building with the presence of God. I also observe how certain traditions—Catholic, Baptist, or otherwise—can sometimes elevate the physical church to a near-sacred status, which risks overshadowing the core message of faith and restoration. The challenge is to balance respect for church buildings with maintaining focus on spiritual health. If you ever find yourself thinking ‘we’re just going to church’ simply because of the building, consider stepping back and asking whether the spiritual nourishment and community you seek are truly found within those walls or in the living interaction among believers. This reflection helped me and others in my circle shift our perspective towards a more vibrant, active faith experience that isn’t confined by brick and mortar. Ultimately, the lesson from the 'high places' biblical narrative and modern practice is clear: church is not about buildings, but about people. Being part of a faith community means building relationships and sharing faith wherever God leads us, not just inside a sanctuary.
