first edit don't hate

When working on your first edit, it’s completely natural to feel frustrated or dissatisfied with your initial draft. However, reframing your mindset to embrace the first edit as an essential step in the creative process can make a meaningful difference. Instead of hating your work or becoming overly critical, try to view the first edit as an opportunity to learn and grow as a writer. From my own experience, I’ve found that giving yourself permission to produce imperfect drafts relieves much of the pressure associated with editing. This mindset encourages you to focus on refining ideas clearly and identifying areas that need improvement, rather than getting stuck on minor flaws prematurely. It helps to break down the editing process into manageable parts — first focusing on structural changes and big-picture improvements, then moving on to grammar and stylistic details. Constructive criticism should be welcomed as a tool for growth rather than something to resist or hate. Over time, this positive approach to editing has greatly enhanced the quality of my work, made me more confident in my writing abilities, and made the entire process more enjoyable.
