Divorce is a sh*tshow and he’s making it worse

Divorce is freaking brutal. I walked away, and yeah, I’ll wear the “A-hole” label if that’s what it takes. No horror story here, no abuse, no lies, no addictions. Just 3 years of me footing the bills while he… existed. No kids, no shared chaos. Now he wants 70% of my savings and half my income. That money is mine. I saved it before we even said “I do.” I never touched marital funds. I offered 40% of savings and 30% of earnings, more than fair. But no. This isn’t partnership. It’s greed, plain and simple. I supported him for years, now he’s trying to bleed me dry. F that. I’m not here to be his retirement plan. Should I lawyer up?

In cases where savings were accumulated prior to marriage, it is crucial to understand how these assets are treated under divorce laws. Many jurisdictions distinguish between marital and separate property, typically protecting assets acquired before marriage from division. The emotional strain of divorce combined with financial pressures can lead to aggressive demands, such as the claim for 70% of savings or half of the income, which may not be legally justified. It is important to document all financial contributions accurately, including pre-marital savings and income, to build a strong case. Consulting with a qualified family law attorney is advisable when facing such unfair financial claims. Legal counsel can provide guidance tailored to your jurisdiction, help negotiate fair settlements, and protect your financial interests. Moreover, understanding the legal process involving court documentation—such as presenting your bar card and photo ID to use attorney windows as referenced in the court system—can ease navigation through legal proceedings. Financial independence and fairness in divorce require clear evidence, transparency, and sometimes assertive legal strategies. Standing your ground against attempts to treat you as a "retirement plan" ensures your hard-earned assets remain secure while promoting equitable resolutions. Ultimately, being informed about your rights and proactive legal support significantly improves outcomes during the stressful process of divorce.
