Quilt As You Go Star Wars Quilt

I was able to trim all my quilted blocks today, I love that pile of quilted trimmed blocks when I get that far.

My “design walls” are the beds so I arranged the blocks how I want to sew them together and got started with the sashings.

The last two photos are sewing the first vertical sashing. I have all the vertical sashings done now & hope

to be able to complete the horizontal ones Sunday. But, I have a 3 hour class (sewing) Sunday so I’m not

sure if I’ll even get to the Star Wars quilt. If not maybe Monday afternoon I’ll have some time.

... Read moreSeeing my Star Wars quilt blocks come together has me so excited, and I wanted to share some tips for anyone dreaming of making their own fandom quilt! If you've ever searched for 'Star Wars quilt' or even 'Harry Potter quilt ideas,' you know how inspiring themed projects can be. It’s such a unique way to bring your favorite stories to life in fabric! First off, choosing your theme is the fun part. For my Star Wars quilt, I knew I wanted to feature iconic characters like R2-D2 and C-3PO, and the images of my trimmed blocks definitely show them off. Think about what elements from your chosen universe you want to highlight. Are you going for character portraits, iconic symbols, or maybe a mosaic of memorable scenes? Once you have a vision, diving into fabric selection is next. Finding 'Star Wars quilt fabric' can be a treasure hunt! Look for licensed prints, but also think about coordinating solids or blenders that match the color palette of your theme. Don't be afraid to mix and match; sometimes a subtle background fabric can make those character blocks truly pop. Next, let's talk patterns. While my project uses a 'quilt as you go' method, which is fantastic for managing larger quilts, you might be looking for specific designs. For instance, if you've ever seen a 'printable Lakota star quilt pattern,' you know how striking geometric designs can be. You can adapt these concepts to your chosen theme. Perhaps a star block for a Star Wars quilt, or a lightning bolt for a Harry Potter one! There are tons of free patterns online, or you can get creative and design your own blocks. The key is to break down your overall vision into manageable pieces. Speaking of manageable pieces, the 'quilt as you go' method I'm using is a game-changer! Instead of quilting a huge top all at once, you quilt individual blocks or small sections (like my trimmed blocks) and then join them with sashing. It's less daunting, especially for larger projects. My sewing machine has been working overtime on these vertical sashings, and seeing those R2-D2 and C-3PO blocks get neatly joined is incredibly satisfying. Accurate trimming of your quilted blocks is crucial here, as my photos highlight; precise cuts make for beautiful seams when you add the sashing. If you're thinking beyond Star Wars, imagine a 'Harry Potter quilt'! You could use house colors for different blocks, incorporate golden snitches, or even create appliqués of wands and spells. The possibilities are endless. The main takeaway is not to be intimidated. Every quilter, no matter how experienced, started somewhere. Grab your favorite fabric, fire up your sewing machine, and enjoy the journey of creating something truly personal and magical!
