Party City experienced significant growth in the 2000s, becoming a dominant player in the party supply industry, bolstered by its acquisition of flagship brands like Party America in 2005 and expanding its store count to over 900 locations by 2015.
However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, coupled with an increasing shift toward online shopping and heightened competition from discount retailers, significantly affected sales, leading the company to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2023.
Despite emerging from bankruptcy later that year, Party City continues to face challenges, including a restructuring of its operations and an ongoing need to adapt to changing consumer behaviors.

Stepping into Party City in the 2000s instantly transported you to a world of pure celebration. It wasn't just a store; it was an experience, a treasure hunt for every party dream. For anyone who grew up then, go to Party City wasn't just an errand—it was an adventure that defined so many celebrations. It truly was one of the most popular 2000s stores because it offered an unmatched variety and a magical atmosphere. I can still picture those incredibly long, brightly lit aisles, stretching out seemingly forever, packed from floor to ceiling. You’d wander past sections for every occasion imaginable – from birthday themes for kids to graduation parties, baby showers, and holiday decor. The sheer variety was mind-boggling! From picking out colorful lootbags to fill with tiny toys, to rows of sparkly candles and endless confetti options, you knew you’d find exactly what you needed, and probably ten other things you didn't know you needed until you saw them. The balloons section alone was a wonderland; I swear I saw a Hello Kitty balloon every time, alongside character themes like Spiderman and even pirate-themed decorations. But let's be real, for me (and probably you!), the costume section was the main event, especially around Halloween. Party City was the go-to place for 2000s costumes. I remember spending hours debating between a classic Scream mask or something totally ridiculous like a giant feathered hat. And who could forget those iconic packaged costumes? Seeing that Mac Daddy costume package with its jacket, pants, and hat always brings a smile to my face. It was thrilling to imagine transforming into a pop star, a superhero, or even a character from High School Musical – they had all the accessories you could dream of! Browsing those racks, envisioning my Halloween night, was half the fun of shopping in the 2000s. Beyond the costumes, the sheer array of supplies was unmatched. Need blowouts for New Year's Eve? Done. Want to deck out your entire house in a specific color scheme? They had it. The tangible experience of touching the glitter, trying on a mask, or picking out the perfect party favor was part of the magic. It shaped so many of our childhood and teenage memories, providing the backdrop to countless celebrations. Even with today's online options, that feeling of discovery and excitement from browsing those physical aisles is something I genuinely miss from Party City in the 2000s.
