Question of the day
What's something in a book that gives you the ick and takes you completely out of the scene?

Okay, fellow bookworms, let's get real for a moment. We've all been there, right? You're completely engrossed in a fantastic story, the world has come alive around you, and then BAM! Something happens, a phrase is uttered, or a scene unfolds that just gives you 'the ick.' It's that jarring moment that pulls you right out of the narrative, leaving you scratching your head or even cringing. And sometimes, these aren't even major plot points, but just those 'weirdest memories' that stick with you long after you've turned the final page. For me, one of the biggest sources of book 'icks' is often in the dialogue, especially in romance or YA novels. You know the kind ā where characters say things that no human being would ever realistically utter, or their 'witty banter' feels incredibly forced. Sometimes it's overly flowery language trying too hard to be poetic, or even worse, when a male lead says something possessive or borderline creepy, and the female lead swoons. It's like, really? That's supposed to be romantic? Those lines become instant 'weirdest memories' for all the wrong reasons. They jar me so much that I can almost hear the author typing, rather than feeling immersed in a real conversation. Another common 'ick' for me comes from character inconsistencies or unrealistic portrayals. When a character's actions suddenly contradict their established personality, or when a supposedly intelligent person does something incredibly foolish just to advance the plot, it's a huge turn-off. Or how about the 'not like other girls' trope? It feels so tired and often comes across as internalized misogyny, making me roll my eyes instead of empathizing with the protagonist. These moments are unforgettable, but not in a good way ā they become those 'weirdest memories' that make you wonder, "What was the author thinking?" Then there are the plot devices that just make you groan. Love triangles that drag on forever without any real development, or deus ex machina moments where a completely random solution conveniently appears to resolve a seemingly insurmountable problem. It cheapens the entire reading experience. I also find myself getting 'the ick' from overly graphic descriptions that don't serve the story ā whether it's gratuitous violence, uncomfortable intimacy, or just unnecessary bodily function details. There's a fine line between sensory detail and just being gross, and when an author crosses it, it becomes a 'weirdest memory' I wish I could unread. Ultimately, these 'icks' are personal, and what bothers one reader might not bother another. But what unites us is that feeling of being disconnected from the story we were once so invested in. It reminds you that you're reading a book, rather than living inside its world. So, what are your personal 'weirdest memories' of book 'icks'? Those specific lines, scenes, or character traits that instantly take you out of the moment? I'd love to hear them! Let's bond over our shared literary pet peeves and help each other spot the signs of an impending 'ick'!
