Did my turtles survive the blizzard of 2026?
The blizzard of 2026 definitely kept me worrying about my turtles :(
Living through the blizzard of 2026 was a stressful experience for me as a reptile owner, especially worrying about my turtles in such extreme weather. From watching the heavy snow accumulate, reaching 22 inches, I was concerned their enclosures wouldn't withstand the storm. What I learned during and after this event was valuable for all reptile enthusiasts. Cold-blooded animals like turtles have remarkable adaptations that help them survive harsh winters. Many species naturally burrow into the ground or beneath leaf litter to escape the cold. In my case, despite the heavy snow that nearly buried their outdoor enclosures, my turtles instinctively dug themselves under the soil, effectively insulating against freezing temperatures. This natural behavior was a huge relief and proved that given the right environment, turtles can cope with even severe winter storms. However, the key to their survival also lies in how their enclosures are prepared. I noticed that areas propped up a tree branch or similar structures helped maintain partial shelter on the roofs of their homes, preventing complete collapse under the snow’s weight. These small protective measures can be lifesavers. It's crucial to check enclosure sturdiness before winter arrives and remove snow carefully to avoid harming your pets. Moreover, after the storm, I observed that on warmer days around 70°F, my turtles eagerly soaked up the sunlight for basking, which is essential for their metabolism and immune functions. Providing access to natural sunlight or UVB lighting indoors during prolonged cold spells supports their recovery and health. If you live in regions prone to heavy snow or sudden cold snaps, consider these tips: create deeper substrates for burrowing, reinforce enclosure roofs, and monitor temperature fluctuations closely. Always ensure your turtles have access to warmth and shade as needed. Witnessing my turtles emerge safely from such a destructive blizzard reaffirmed the resilience of these reptiles and the importance of being prepared as a caring pet owner.
