I have two young parakeets, a boy and a girl named Summerr and Wynter. I’ve had them since May, and they’re still getting used to me. They’re at that stage where they’re a little afraid, but I’m being patient and giving them time to adjust. Taking care of parakeets can be a bit tricky, but it’s been such a rewarding experience. The blue one, Winter, is starting to warm up to me more than Summer, my yellow bird. I’ve learned that birds go through hormonal cycles twice a year, and Summer seems to be in that phase now, which explains why she’s not as receptive. She does nick at me when I try to pet her, but I’ve noticed she’s willing to interact when it comes to treats—especially when she sees Winter eating.
Having these birds for the past eight months has taught me a lot, including the importance of patience and “spreading my wings.” While their chirping can be a little loud at times, I’m getting used to their unique way of communicating, especially since this is my first time caring for birds. They’re incredibly adorable, therapeutic, and have truly become the loves of my life.
