Day 6 of our 10-day Colombia itinerary: Medellín ➡️ Guatapé ✨
Instead of doing Guatapé as a day trip from Medellín, we decided to slow it down and stay a couple nights — and I’m SO glad we did. 🥹
We checked into our hotel, had lunch with the most beautiful views, and spent the evening wandering through colorful downtown Guatapé. 🎨🇨🇴
Most people come here for one very famous reason 👀 but we’re saving that for tomorrow…
Save this if Guatapé is on your Colombia itinerary ✈️

Having spent a couple of nights in Guatapé myself, I can attest that this town deserves more than just a quick visit from Medellín. The slower pace allows you to fully appreciate the vibrant streets adorned with colorful zócalos—decorative panels unique to the area—and engage more deeply with local culture. Staying overnight also means you can witness the town’s atmosphere in different lights: the peaceful early mornings and the lively evenings when locals and tourists mingle. One highlight you don’t want to miss is a boat tour on the Guatapé reservoir, which gives stunning perspectives of the surrounding rock formations and lush greenery. If you’re feeling adventurous, climbing the El Peñol rock the following day is a must; it’s the famous reason most people visit, and from the top, the panoramic views are breathtaking. Additionally, with extra time, you can explore local eateries offering authentic Colombian cuisine and shop for handmade crafts without feeling rushed. This extra time enriches your experience far beyond a typical day trip, making your Colombia itinerary truly memorable.
