How to Change iPhone Exposure ☀️

Have you ever tried to take a picture on iPhone and it’s just too darn bright? Well here’s how to fix that!

Why: Sometimes a bright part of an image is read by your camera sensor and it throws off the exposure of the whole image, causing it to be blown out.

The Fix: Simply click on your screen and a box with a sun will appear. This is your exposure level! ☀️ All you have to do is click and hold and drag the exposure down to where you like it!

I typically like a lot of contrast in my photo so I brought it down a lot, but I also showed a nice in between option in picture No. 4.

Next time your levels are blown out try this simple trick to get you picture from 0 to 100!

... Read moreI remember when I first started getting serious about iPhone photography, I thought the camera just knew best. But then I'd always end up with those frustrating shots – you know, where the beautiful sky is completely blown out, or a bright window makes everything inside look like a cave. That's exactly why learning to control your iPhone's exposure manually, especially with that little sun icon slider, became my secret weapon! The original tip is spot on for fixing overexposed areas, like that glaring bright outdoor pavement we often see in pictures, making objects inside seem almost white and losing all detail, just like in the airport scene in the image examples. But this trick isn't just for turning down the brightness; it's equally powerful for brightening up underexposed shots! If you're trying to capture a subject in shadow against a brighter background, tapping on your subject and then dragging the sun icon up will bring out those details without blowing out the highlights completely. It's all about finding that perfect balance. One thing I've learned is the difference between simply tapping to focus and then adjusting the exposure with the slider. When you tap on a specific area of your screen, your iPhone automatically tries to set both focus and exposure for that point. This is a great starting point! But what if the automatic exposure isn't quite right? That's where the sun icon comes in. After you tap to focus, then you can manually refine the exposure by dragging the sun icon up or down. I often do this when I'm shooting portraits against a bright background – I tap on the person's face for focus, and then subtly drag the exposure slider down a bit so their face isn't overexposed by the background light. Another pro-tip I swear by is using AE/AF Lock. Have you ever tried to take a picture, gotten the exposure just right, and then recomposed your shot, only for the exposure to change again? So annoying! To prevent this, after you tap to focus and adjust your exposure with the sun icon, hold your finger down on the screen until "AE/AF Lock" appears. This locks both your focus and exposure, allowing you to recompose your shot without losing those perfect settings. It's incredibly useful for dynamic scenes or when you want consistency across multiple shots. I also found this technique incredibly useful when shooting in challenging lighting conditions, like during golden hour when the sun is low and bright, or trying to capture food indoors near a window. The iPhone's auto mode sometimes struggles with these high-contrast situations. By using the sun icon exposure slider, I can choose to expose for the highlights (making the sun look good) or for the shadows (making my subject bright enough) and then adjust to find a happy medium. It gives me so much more creative control, helping me get that "properly exposed" look right in the moment. Don't forget that this also works for videos! So next time your iPhone footage looks a bit off, remember that little sun icon is there to save the day.
