Who Made You So Heartless?

You know that feeling, right? The one where you see someone act completely indifferent, or worse, deliberately hurtful, and you just think, 'How do they do it? How do they not care at all?' I've been there, staring at the ceiling at 3 AM, wishing I could just switch off that part of my brain that feels everything so deeply. Sometimes, I even try to be heartless, especially after being let down or hurt, or when I feel like I'm giving too much of myself. But it's like my system just rejects the idea. I simply don't have it in me to just *not care*. It makes me wonder, how do some people manage to only think about themselves all the time and genuinely not care about others? Is it a skill they've honed, a deliberate choice, or a defense mechanism that's become their default? The image in my head is always of a journey. We start life, full of this pure, unadulterated 'love energy' as babies. We're born with an innate capacity for connection and warmth. Then, somewhere along the way in life, something profound happens. Maybe it's a deep betrayal by someone you trusted, repeated disappointments that erode your faith in humanity, or a series of painful experiences that chip away at that initial warmth. For some, these events turn their heart cold, so much so that they might even end up hurting others without a second thought, perhaps as a way to protect themselves from further pain. But what about those of us whose hearts just refuse to freeze? We witness the pain, the indifference, the callousness, and instead of becoming numb, we absorb it, feeling it even more intensely. It's a double-edged sword, isn't it? On one hand, it means we can connect deeply, offer genuine compassion, and experience immense joy from loving and being loved. On the other, it leaves us incredibly vulnerable, often feeling the sting of others' heartlessness far more sharply than those who've built walls around themselves. How do you only think about yourself all the time and not care about others? It's a question that haunts many of us who are wired differently.
