My go to snack when I on my monthly. What’s yours? #period #comfortfood #periodcramprelief #snacksss
Oh, the monthly cycle – it brings so many joys, but for many of us, it also brings along those dreaded period cramps! We’ve all been there, curled up on the couch, just wanting something, anything, to make the discomfort a little bit better. For me, that something often comes in a delicious, chocolatey form. You know that feeling when you just need a treat? When those cramps start, my absolute go-to is that iconic Hershey's 'cookies 'n' creme' bar, the one with 'KING SINCE 1894' proudly displayed. But does chocolate, especially a delicious one like Hershey's, really help with period cramps, or is it just a comforting placebo? From my own experience, it's a bit of both, with some science-backed reasons too! Firstly, chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is known to contain compounds that can boost your mood, like serotonin. When you're feeling down and crampy, a little mood lift is always welcome. My 'cookies 'n' creme' bar might not be dark chocolate, but that creamy sweetness combined with crunchy cookie bits is pure bliss and definitely puts a smile on my face, distracting me from the discomfort. Beyond the mood boost, chocolate also contains magnesium. Magnesium is a mineral that's super important for muscle function and can help relax uterine muscles, potentially easing cramps. While a single serving of my favorite Hershey's bar might not provide a therapeutic dose of magnesium, every little bit helps, right? Plus, the sheer act of indulging in something you love can be incredibly comforting. It’s part of a self-care ritual during a time when your body needs extra TLC. When I'm reaching for my comfort snack, I usually just have a portion, maybe one-third of the pack, which is about '130 CALORIES'. It's enough to satisfy that craving without feeling overly indulgent. The whole 'NET WT 2.6 OZ (73 g)' bar is fantastic, but sometimes a small, focused treat is all you need. Of course, chocolate isn't a magical cure-all. Over the years, I've learned a few other tricks that really complement my chocolate therapy. A warm heating pad on my lower abdomen is a lifesaver – it helps relax those muscles. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day makes a huge difference, and sometimes even a gentle walk can alleviate some of the tension. Listening to my body and getting extra rest when needed is also paramount. So, while that Hershey's 'cookies 'n' creme' bar might not be a medical treatment for period pain, it's certainly a valuable part of my comfort arsenal during "that time of the month." It provides a psychological boost, a hint of beneficial minerals, and a much-needed moment of indulgence. What are your go-to comfort snacks or remedies when period cramps strike? I'd love to hear your tips!
