Many people wonder how they can be sure they are truly hearing from God rather than their own thoughts or emotions. From my experience, the key lies in combining meditation on Scripture with quiet reflection and honest prayer. When you read a verse or passage that stands out, don’t just rush past it. Instead, pause and ask yourself what God might be telling you through this. I find it helpful to write down these impressions and revisit them later with a calm mind. This practice helps me sort out messages that align with biblical truth from fleeting thoughts influenced by feelings or desires. It’s also vital to remember that God’s voice will never contradict the core teachings of the Bible. When in doubt, seeking counsel from someone knowledgeable in Scripture can provide valuable insight and confirmation. Don’t hesitate to pray specifically for clarity and peace about what you’ve heard or sensed. In my journey, I learned that sometimes divine confirmation comes through a sense of peace that feels unmistakably reassuring. Another important aspect is openness to embodied action—what the text calls "the final phase of lectio divina: embodying what the Holy Spirit has revealed." This means applying what you’ve discerned in real life, whether it’s through a change in attitude, acts of gratitude, or steps toward forgiveness and growth. This holistic approach—reading, praying, reflecting, seeking counsel, and living out the guidance—creates a trustworthy framework to discern God’s voice more confidently. Above all, I’ve found that patience plays a key role. Sometimes messages come clearly in one sitting, other times they unfold gradually. Trusting the process and returning to meditation with a humble and attentive heart opens the door for deeper communication with God’s Spirit.
