... Read moreStepping into a new culinary experience is always a thrill, and my recent dive into the world of Korean silkworm soup, or 'beondegi,' was no exception! I'd heard whispers about this unique Korean street food, and curiosity finally got the better of me. The thought of trying silkworms was definitely intimidating, but I was determined to broaden my palate. So, what exactly is Korean silkworm soup? Beondegi is essentially steamed or boiled silkworm pupae, usually seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, and other spices, served in a light broth. It's a popular snack in South Korea, often found from street vendors or in traditional markets. Historically, it became a common source of protein during difficult times, and over the years, it's evolved into a beloved comfort food for many. Nutritionally, it's packed with protein, which makes it quite a powerhouse snack! My adventure led me to New Village Gastropub at 3566 Milwaukee Ave, Northbrook, IL 60062, where I bravely ordered a bowl of Silkworm Soup for $9.99. As the dish arrived, I took a deep breath. The silkworms themselves have a distinctive appearance – small, brown, and oval-shaped. The aroma was earthy and slightly nutty, quite different from anything I'd smelled before. The broth was clear, with hints of soy and a savory depth. Taking that first spoonful was a moment of truth. The texture is often what people are most apprehensive about, and I get it! It's somewhat chewy on the outside, giving way to a softer, almost creamy interior. But surprisingly, the taste was far from what I expected. It’s savory, with a strong umami flavor, often described as a mix of mushroom, nuts, and a very subtle seafood-like note. The broth complemented it perfectly, adding a salty, garlicky kick that really brought the dish together. It wasn't love at first bite for me, but it certainly wasn't off-putting either. It was... interesting, in the best possible way! For anyone considering trying Korean silkworm soup for the first time, here's my advice: go with an open mind! Don't let preconceived notions about what you're eating deter you. Focus on the flavors and textures. It’s a truly unique culinary experience that pushes you out of your comfort zone. If you're in the Northbrook area, I highly recommend checking out New Village Gastropub to try their version. It's a fantastic place to start your beondegi journey. You might just surprise yourself like I did!
