How to Make Bias Tape
Making your own bias tape can significantly elevate your sewing projects by providing a custom and polished edge finish. Bias tape is made from fabric cut on the bias (at a 45-degree angle to the weave), which gives it a stretch and flexibility that works well for binding curved edges. To begin, choose a lightweight, woven fabric that complements your project. Cotton fabrics are often preferred for their ease of use and durability. Using a rotary cutter and a quilting ruler can help you cut accurate strips consistently. Remember, the width of the strips depends on the final width of the bias tape needed, often around 1 to 2 inches before folding. After cutting, you can use a bias tape maker tool, which folds and presses the fabric strips evenly to create a neat tape. Alternatively, you can fold and press the strips manually using an iron, first folding the long edges towards the center and then folding the strip in half. When attaching bias tape, pin or clip it evenly along the fabric edge, stretching slightly for curved edges to ensure smooth application. Sewing slowly with a consistent seam allowance will result in professional-looking finishes. Making your own bias tape also allows you to customize the color, pattern, and fabric type, adding a unique touch to your garments or craft projects. With practice, making bias tape becomes quick and easy, allowing you to reuse fabric scraps and reduce costs, while improving the quality of your sewing work.
