Start running for summertime 🏃♀️ 💨
I used to have a dislike for running, questioning why people would opt for it when there are so many other sports available. However, after living in the US for six months, I began to appreciate the activity. Through research and learning from my neighbors, I discovered the benefits of running, especially for those with busy schedules like families with young children who struggle to find time for the gym. Running not only enhances endurance and provides a full-body workout but also serves as a mental release after a long day at work.
Now, during the summer, my family and I go for a run together around 4-5 pm, covering a distance of 1-1:30 hours before returning home for dinner.
I've noticed significant improvements in my overall health and well-being. My energy levels have increased, and I find myself more focused and productive throughout the day. The endorphin boost from running has also positively impacted my mood, making me happier and more relaxed.
Running has truly become a central part of our family's lifestyle, and it's something I now look forward to with enthusiasm. It's amazing how an activity I once disliked has brought so much joy, health, and togetherness into our lives.

Embracing summer running has truly been a game-changer for my family and me. What started as a hesitant step into an activity I once disliked, has blossomed into a cherished daily ritual. I often think back to the sentiment, "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE GREAT TO START" – it perfectly captures my journey. When the summer months roll around, the idea of running can seem daunting with the heat, but I've learned a few tricks that make it not only bearable but truly enjoyable. First off, timing is everything during the summer. I've found that getting out early in the morning, right as the sun is coming up, or waiting until the late afternoon/early evening (around 4-5 pm, like my family does) makes a huge difference. The air is cooler, and the scenery is just beautiful during those golden hours. Hydration is another non-negotiable for me. I always make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after our runs. For longer distances, I carry a small water bottle or plan our route to pass by a water fountain. It's surprising how quickly you can dehydrate in the summer heat! What I wear also plays a big role in my comfort. Light-colored, moisture-wicking clothes are my go-to. They help keep me cool and prevent chafing, which can definitely ruin a good run. And a good pair of running shoes, of course! For sun protection, a cap or visor and a sweat-proof sunscreen are absolute musts. I've also learned to listen to my body more intently during summer runs. If it's particularly hot, I don't push for speed or distance. Sometimes, it’s just about getting out there and moving, even if it means slowing down or taking a walk break. Remember, you don't have to be a 'GREAT' runner to reap the rewards; consistency and enjoyment are key. Making running a family activity has been one of the biggest joys. To keep everyone motivated, especially the younger ones, I try to switch up our routes. Exploring new parks, trails, or even just a different neighborhood keeps things fresh. We sometimes turn it into a game, spotting certain objects or racing to the next lamppost. It's not just about the physical exercise; it's about spending quality time together, creating shared memories, and showing my kids the importance of an active lifestyle. The mental clarity and fresh perspective I gain from being outdoors, soaking in a bit of vitamin D, and just focusing on my breath are invaluable after a busy day. It’s a simple pleasure that anyone can start, no matter their fitness level. So, if you're thinking about starting your own summer running journey, just take that first step – you won't regret it!
