when we talk about non binary people it always seems to be afab focused. non binary is often viewed as a “girl” transitioning to be more masculine or androgynous. often times we forget about our amab non binary friends and their representation ❤️ #nonbinary #enby #theythem #trans #lgbtq
From my personal experience, being part of the non-binary community as someone who was assigned male at birth (AMAB) can often feel invisible or misunderstood. Many discussions focus on AFAB (assigned female at birth) people and the transition from feminine to more masculine or androgynous presentations. However, it’s important to acknowledge that non-binary identity isn’t limited to this narrative. For AMAB non-binary individuals, gender expression can be incredibly diverse. You can have a beard and still embrace your non-binary identity. You can enjoy traditionally masculine activities like sports while also feeling comfortable wearing makeup or skirts if that feels authentic to you. Importantly, you don’t have to fit into a stereotypical “non-binary look” to have your gender identity recognized and respected. One lesson for me was understanding that being assigned male at birth doesn’t automatically make someone a man, nor does presenting masculinely. Gender isn’t about external markers or societal expectations but about how you understand and define yourself. Embracing this has empowered me and many others to live authentically without conforming to rigid norms. Another key aspect is self-respect and demanding respect from others. You know yourself better than anyone else, and your identity deserves recognition exactly as it is. Whether you’re dressing in traditionally masculine or feminine styles, or blending both, your non-binary identity is valid. This understanding helps create more inclusive spaces where all non-binary people—regardless of assigned sex at birth—feel seen and valued. Representation matters, and by sharing our experiences openly, we help challenge narrow stereotypes and widen acceptance of gender diversity in society.
