Here’s How We Budget $3,500 For Our Joint Expenses

HEYYYY SGFC Fam!

Happy Thursday! Hope you guys are doing as fine as me. 🙃

Another month has flown by so let’s take a peek at our Sept Joint Expenses 📝💸

This month’s “out-of-the-norm” expense goes to our car servicing 🚗🔧 (we do this once a year).

I kept wondering how come we always overspend but the bank account still looks okay…

Turns out it’s because Meimei’s school fees are still deducted from her CDA 🤣 #parentinghack

As of now, her CDA still has about $2.9k left, which should last until the end of Q1 next year.

And for now, we’ve tentatively decided not to put Jiejie into student care – which means some cost-savings there. We’re thinking of redirecting that budget to classes or activities that will make her happier instead. 🥰

FYI: car instalment, petrol, income-tax, insurance & dining-out sit under our individual expenses – not in the joint bucket.

... Read moreFrom my experience managing joint household finances, one helpful tip is to clearly separate joint expenses from individual ones, just like we do with car installments and dining out. This keeps the shared budget focused on core family needs like childcare and groceries. When budgeting for childcare, it's crucial to factor in possible changes like reducing formal student care in favor of activities that better suit your child's happiness and development. That not only saves money but supports well-being. Another lesson we've learned is the importance of budgeting for irregular yearly costs, such as car servicing. Setting aside funds monthly helps avoid sudden financial stress when these expenses come due. To make tracking easier, using simple spreadsheets where recurring costs like rent or school fees appear regularly can provide clear visibility on where funds go. For example, entering your monthly rent of $650 consistently helps monitor yearly totals. Don't forget to check for government support programs like cost-of-living payments, which can provide some relief. Also, consider how a shift in work hours for a partner might affect childcare and overall savings — this could significantly impact your budget balance. Above all, mindful spending and open communication within the family are key. By regularly reviewing and adjusting your budget together, you can handle unexpected expenses and work toward financial goals more confidently.
