My Daughter asked “Why Do We Pray to God?”
Hey SGFC Fam!
Happy Monday and sawadeeeekap! 🙏🏻
Last weekend, jiejie was super cute. She got curious why I tuck my amulet and chain inside my shirt which led to a convo about god, and why we pray.
Disclaimer - I’m not here to preach. And I never will 😅
But for me, I believe in one true god, and that it exists across all religions which I think it’s called omnism.
I believe the foundation of all religions is the same. It’s to do good.
And for me, I don’t pray to ask for more.
I pray to be grateful and thankful for what I already have.
And that’s something I’ll pass on to my girls too.
What about you?
What do you believe in and why?
In my own experience, prayer has always been a deeply personal practice, much like the story shared here about tucking an amulet close to one’s heart—not as a display, but as a symbol of faith and humility. I relate strongly to the idea that prayer isn't just about asking for things; it’s more about cultivating gratitude for the blessings we already have. This perspective can transform how we approach challenges and successes alike. When I faced significant health challenges, similar to the journey mentioned in the article during cancer treatment, I found that focusing my prayers on healing and inner peace rather than material gains helped me maintain a positive mindset. It also aligned with the shared belief that all religions, in their essence, promote doing good and living intentionally. Keeping sacred objects like amulets close symbolizes more than protection; for me, it’s a daily reminder to stay grounded and appreciative of life’s gifts. This intimate connection to spirituality reinforced my commitment to teaching my children about faith as a flexible and personal journey—one where they can choose their path and understand that prayer is a way to express gratitude and seek strength rather than merely petition for more. Ultimately, embracing omnism invites us to appreciate the common values shared across faiths—love, kindness, gratitude, and humility—which can unite us despite differing beliefs. Sharing these insights with our children, as the author does, sets a foundation for a meaningful life centered on appreciation and intentional living, which I believe is a message that resonates universally.
