Should every deceased person be embalmed?

Should every deceased person be embalmed?

The answer might surprise you.

Many people assume embalming is always necessary.

According to Queenie, an embalmer with 8 years of experience, the answer depends on the family’s wishes, the funeral arrangements, and the condition of the deceased.

In this episode, she explains:

🤍 What embalming actually is.

🤍 How it helps preserve and restore a loved one’s appearance.

🤍 When families should consider embalming—and when it may not be necessary.

She also gives an honest, behind-the-scenes look at what the process involves, helping to demystify one of the most misunderstood parts of funeral care.

Our hope is that by understanding the process, families can make informed decisions during one of life’s most difficult moments.

💙 Follow @Harmony Funeral Care for the final episode, where Queenie shares what has kept her going through 8 years as an embalmer despite the challenges, sacrifices, and emotional weight of the profession.

... Read moreHaving worked with families during funeral preparations, I’ve noticed that embalming often causes confusion and emotional stress. Embalming is a process that combines preservation and presentation: chemicals are injected to preserve the body and slow decomposition, while blood and fluids are drained to clean the body. The embalmer then focuses on restoring a natural appearance through facial setting, clothing, and makeup. Many people assume embalming is mandatory, but it truly depends on several factors. For instance, if there will be a delay between death and the funeral, embalming helps preserve the body’s condition during this time. It can also reduce health risks, especially when the deceased may have infectious diseases. However, if the funeral is scheduled quickly and the family prefers direct burial or cremation, embalming may not be necessary. From personal experience, I’ve found that families often appreciate understanding the purpose behind embalming. It not only maintains appearance for viewings but also offers time for relatives to gather. However, respecting the wishes of the family and cultural or religious traditions is crucial. Some cultures do not encourage embalming, opting for quicker burial to honor their customs. Making decisions about embalming during a sensitive time can feel overwhelming. I recommend discussing the options with funeral care professionals who can explain the benefits and limitations based on specific circumstances. Ultimately, the decision is personal, guided by the family’s values, the deceased’s condition, and practical considerations. If you’re considering embalming for a loved one, ask about the process in detail and how it fits your needs. Understanding the preservation steps and what presentation services entail can help ease concerns. The goal is to provide a comforting experience that honors your loved one’s memory with dignity and respect.
