4 Days in Dalian 🇨🇳

SAVE THIS for the most underrated city in China, Dalian. I spent 4 days falling in love with it. Think European architecture, coastal sea breeze and way fewer crowds than Shanghai or Beijing.

Dalian Day 1-2 Itinerary

Day 1:

✈️ Flew Xiamen Airlines @xiamenairlines from Singapore

🚋 Took Tram 201 for 2 RMB from Dalian Railway Station → Dongguan Jie

📸 Explored Dongguan Jie: cobblestone lanes, European architecture, curated shops & handmade crafts

🌊 Ended at Fisherman’s Wharf for sunset, spotted starfish being sold as a local snack

Day 2:

☕ Walked Japanese-style streets in Nanshan: cute cafes + boutique shops

⛵ Took a boat from Xinghai Square to feed seagulls

🇪🇺 Wandered Venice Water Town canals — legit felt like Italy

🚢 Hit Donggang 5th Street at 10:50am/4:20pm to see the giant cruise ship line up with the road

🍒 Picked fresh cherries straight from the bush at a local farm to end the day (辽宁省大连市银兴生态园农场金普新区分部)

What I loved most during my trip was how accessible and relaxed the city felt – it was easy to navigate using local trams like Tram 201, which costs only a few RMB and provides a genuine local experience. One of the highlights was exploring Dongguan Jie, a historic street filled with beautiful cobblestone lanes and European-style architecture. The area features many curated shops and artisan crafts, perfect for leisurely browsing or picking up unique souvenirs. The cobblestone streets contribute to the city’s charming old-world vibe, reminiscent of a European town by the sea. At Fisherman’s Wharf, I enjoyed a tranquil sunset while observing local delicacies, including starfish snacks which might be unusual but are part of Dalian’s unique culinary scene. The sea breeze at this coastal spot made it an ideal place to relax after a day of sightseeing. In Nanshan, the Japanese-style streets offered a quaint atmosphere with cozy cafes and boutique shops that felt like stepping into a neighborhood in Japan. This cultural diversity enriches Dalian’s appeal. Taking a boat ride from Xinghai Square to feed seagulls was another memorable experience—this leisurely cruise allowed me to see the city from a different perspective and enjoy its fresh coastal air. The Venice Water Town in Dalian is a beautiful replication of Italy’s famous canals, adding an unexpected European flair that enhances the city’s charm. Walking through these canals felt like a mini European getaway without leaving China. At Donggang 5th Street, I witnessed a fascinating sight where large cruise ships lined up along the road early in the morning and late afternoon, creating a unique maritime spectacle for visitors. Ending the day by picking fresh cherries at a local farm was a delightful experience, especially since it wasn’t just about sightseeing but also engaging with local agriculture. This activity is a seasonal treat and adds a personal touch to the trip. Overall, Dalian offers a refreshing alternative to China’s bustling megacities, blending historic charm, coastal beauty, and cultural diversity into one memorable travel destination. Whether you're interested in architecture, food, or nature, spending several days in Dalian is sure to leave you with wonderful memories and a deeper appreciation for this underrated city.

We were on holiday in Dalian, China, and didn’t have any plans that day (we were honestly a bit tired from all the walking), so we made a last-minute decision in the morning to go fishing out at sea. And it turned out to be such a good decision. Before going, I stopped by a pharmacy to get se
