From my own experience playing pickleball, I quickly realized that the repetitive forward bending involved can be surprisingly taxing on the lower back. Much like the original article notes, this sport demands a lot of bending and twisting motions, especially during shots like the low backhand which require knee bends and back flexibility. What really helped me was focusing on strengthening my lower back and hamstrings. Incorporating deadlifts and single-leg Romanian deadlifts (RDL) into my routine made a huge difference. They helped build the necessary muscle support to handle the forward bends with less strain. Also, I can’t stress enough how important hamstring stretches are—tight hamstrings made me more prone to back discomfort during play. Additionally, I added mini lunges and pulse exercises to enhance knee strength and stability, which supports proper posture during low shots. Warming up with these moves before playing not only reduced my risk of pain but also improved my on-court agility. If you’re new to pickleball or have been sidelined by back pain, I highly recommend integrating these strengthening and stretching exercises into your fitness routine. It’s key to protect your back and enjoy the sport long term. Remember, gradual progression and listening to your body are just as important. For personalized help, seeking professional coaching or physiotherapy can provide tailored advice based on your body’s needs.
