After my recent trip to the incredible viveros in Vilcabamba, I wanted to share some tips and insights to help you on your own plant-finding adventure. First off, Vilcabamba is truly a hidden gem for plant lovers. What I found amazing is how concentrated the nurseries are – as the locals say, they're "all one next to the other." This makes it super efficient to visit several places in one go, comparing varieties and prices. I started at one, then walked to the second, and finally explored the largest, my favorite, vivero number three! It’s such a unique experience compared to typical garden centers back home. When you're searching for specific ornamental plants, keep an eye out for unique tropical varieties. I was thrilled to find an 'Elephant's Foot' plant and a gorgeous 'Black Magic' (also known as Alocasia or Colocasia) during my visit. The OCR even picked up on me excitedly pointing out a "split leaf" plant and some "bottle brush" trees! These are often hard to come by elsewhere or are much more expensive. The prices truly surprised me – I heard $1.50 for some, and a large plant I admired was just $10! It really shows the value of buying directly from growers. Beyond just buying, it’s a great opportunity to learn. Don't hesitate to ask the nursery owners about the best care for your new additions, especially if you're planting them in a new environment. I always look for plants with vibrant green leaves, no obvious pests, and a strong root system if possible. It’s also wise to consider the local climate and what thrives there. Since I was getting plants for my new home, I made sure to pick ones that would suit our indoor and outdoor spaces. Another practical tip: think about how you'll transport your purchases. If you're buying larger landscaping plants, you might need to arrange for delivery or ensure you have enough space in your vehicle. And don't forget the pots! The OCR mentioned heading to Loja the next day to get pots, which is a smart move if you're buying many plants. Whether you're decorating a new home, sprucing up your garden, or just love collecting unique foliage, exploring the viveros of Ecuador, especially regions like Vilcabamba, is an unforgettable experience. It’s not just about shopping; it's about connecting with nature and finding beautiful pieces to bring life into your space. Happy plant hunting!
