I got asked on Friday to participate in this race to support the elderly adult association of Vilcabamba, so of course I said yes 🤪 I didn’t even expect to place at all!!! I’m so proud of myself 🥳
Participating in my first-ever race as an adult was both thrilling and rewarding. The race took place in Vilcabamba, a place known for its challenging terrain, with about 70% of the run being uphill. Training on these steep paths prepared me well for the 2.68 km route, which I completed with an average pace of 6:01 per kilometer. What made this experience even more special was running for a meaningful cause—to support the elderly adult association of Vilcabamba. Though I accepted the invitation spontaneously and never expected to place, I was overjoyed to finish 2nd in the women's category and 4th overall. The elevation was higher than my usual training grounds in Loja, but my consistent uphill runs paid off. My husband was there capturing cinematic moments, and my kid, Luke, joined me for part of the run, adding a lovely personal touch to the day. The final stretch was intense, but the sense of accomplishment made every step worthwhile. If you’re thinking about joining your first race, especially in a hilly region like Vilcabamba or Loja, I recommend incorporating hill runs into your training to build strength and endurance. Besides physical readiness, having a supportive community and running for a cause can significantly boost motivation. This event reminded me that sometimes the best experiences come when you least expect them. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a beginner, stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to surprising and proud moments. Keep challenging yourself—you never know what you might achieve!
