Welcome back Amaterasu!
Okami is a game that’s very special to me and so I had the urge to paint a piece for it as soon as I saw the sequel trailer! Kamiya is also one of my favorite project leads and to know he left Platinum to make his old studio, Clover, also with Capcom, feels like a dream!
As a massive fan of Okami, seeing that sequel trailer ignited so much joy and immediately sparked an urge to create something! It’s truly one of those games that leaves a lasting impression, and for me, it's all thanks to its incredible protagonist: Amaterasu, the majestic white wolf. When I decided to create this vibrant digital painting, my goal was to capture her divine essence and the vibrant world she inhabits. Amaterasu isn't just any white wolf; she's the sun goddess incarnate, and her design is absolutely iconic. The striking red markings that adorn her fur, often resembling traditional Japanese calligraphy, are instantly recognizable. These aren't just aesthetic choices; they symbolize her power and connection to the celestial. In my painting, I really focused on making those red markings pop, giving her that powerful, ethereal glow. What makes Amaterasu so special is how she embodies both strength and grace. Throughout the game, you guide her as she restores color and life to a blighted Nippon, using her Celestial Brush powers. This blend of combat and creative problem-solving, all while playing as a beautiful white wolf, is just genius. It’s no wonder so many artists, including myself, are drawn to illustrating her. I remember the first time I played Okami, I was mesmerized by the art style – it felt like a living ukiyo-e painting. That painterly style is something I always try to echo in my own fan art of her. When working on this particular piece, I imagined Amaterasu amidst the lush, flourishing landscapes she helps to restore. That’s why I included vibrant green foliage and delicate pink flowers, symbolizing renewal and beauty. And, of course, no depiction of the sun goddess would be complete without a bright yellow sun and a clear blue sky forming the background, casting everything in a warm, hopeful light. It’s those small details, like the way the light catches her fur or the subtle shimmer of the celestial markings, that make painting her such a rewarding challenge. The news of a sequel feels like a dream come true for anyone who cherishes the original Okami. It brings back memories of exploring the stunning world, solving puzzles, and battling demons alongside Issun. The prospect of guiding Amaterasu, the courageous white wolf, through new adventures and seeing more of that unique ink wash art style is incredibly exciting. I can't wait to see what new stories and challenges await our beloved sun goddess! If you're a fan of Okami, or just appreciate beautiful game art, I hope my tribute to Amaterasu brings a smile to your face and gets you hyped for what's next.
