... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my discovery of the SOAP method, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why this approach has become my go-to for really connecting with God's word. It's truly a fantastic bible study structure idea, especially if you're just starting out or looking for a more consistent way to engage with Scripture daily.
So, what exactly is the SOAP method? The graphic I'm using breaks it down perfectly, focusing on four simple yet powerful steps: Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.
S - Scripture: This is where you choose a passage of the Bible to read. For me, I love picking a specific book and working through it chapter by chapter, or sometimes just a few verses at a time. The key here is to read it slowly, maybe even multiple times. I try to ask myself, "What is this passage *saying*?" Don't rush it! If you're wondering how to read bible chapter and verse, just pick a book like Philippians or James – they're great for beginners – and start with chapter 1, verse 1, and read until you feel like you've found a verse or two that stands out.
O - Observation: This step is all about what you see in the Scripture. What are the key words or phrases that jump out at you? Are there any commands, promises, questions, or repeated ideas? I often write down my general observations in my journal. This isn't about deep theological analysis yet, but simply noticing what's on the page. For example, if I'm reading about love, I'll note every time the word "love" appears and in what context.
A - Application: Now, this is where it gets personal! After observing, I ask myself, "How does this passage apply to my life right now?" Is there a lesson I need to learn, a sin I need to confess, an action I need to take, or a truth I need to embrace? This step helps move the Bible from just an ancient text to a living, breathing guide for my daily walk. For instance, if the Scripture talks about patience, I'll think about a specific situation where I need to be more patient this week.
P - Prayer: Finally, I respond to God in prayer based on what I've read and applied. I might thank Him for the truth revealed, ask for strength to apply the lesson, or confess where I've fallen short. It's a beautiful way to close the loop and turn my study into a conversation with God. This is where I truly connect with the "God soap" aspect – allowing His word to cleanse and transform me through prayer.
For anyone just figuring out how to start studying the Bible, I can't recommend this beginner soap bible study method enough. It provides clear steps without being overwhelming.
