It’s a huge part of what we do as non-commissioned officers, but it’s not always easy, and sometimes, you might even feel a bit “villainized” for it, as the OCR put it perfectly. I’ve been there, feeling like I’m constantly fighting battles on behalf of my team, and honestly, sometimes it feels like I’m going against the grain. But every single time, I go to bed peaceful, knowing I've done everything in my power for my Airmen. It’s not just a job; it's a calling to take care of the people entrusted to you. As a senior NCO, I truly believe it’s my responsibility to go above and beyond for them, every single time. There are so many instances where I've had to walk up to the Commander's office, not for myself, but to ensure an Airman’s voice was heard, or that they received the support they needed. Whether it’s navigating a complex personal issue, fighting for a career opportunity, or simply ensuring they’re treated fairly, it takes dedication. People will say what they have to say, and there are always those who don't care or don't understand your commitment. But I mean, I’m not doing nothing wrong. I’m supposed to be doing what I do as a senior NCO, which is taking care of people. It can be isolating when you're standing up for your Airmen, especially if it means challenging the status quo or dealing with peers that don't share the same level of commitment. But that’s okay. We keep it cordial, but my focus remains on my team. Their well-being, their development, and their success are my top priorities. The satisfaction of seeing an Airman thrive because you fought for them is immeasurable. It makes every uncomfortable conversation, every pushback, and every long hour absolutely worth it.
