Can you carry 75% of your body weight?
Farmers carries can be so functional and beneficial for spinal stability…
When done correctly.
✅ DO: Carry the weights away from your body. Think carrying a bucket.
🚫 DONT: Let the weights rest on your sides.
✅ DO: Keep your shoulders back and nose forward.
🚫 DONT: Let your shoulders slump and your nose go up. This strains your neck.
✅ DO: Engage your core.
🚫 DONT: Keep core relaxed.
✅ DO: Carry HEAVY weights. The heaviest you can carry with good form.
🚫 DONT: Carry light weights. This will not challenge your core as much.
The goal is to carry 75% of your body weight distributed to each hand.
For example. I weigh 135. 75% of that is about 100 lbs so my goal would be 50 pounds in each hand.

From my own experience incorporating farmer's carries into my workout routine, I've found them incredibly effective for improving not just strength but also balance and posture. The key is really focusing on form rather than just the amount of weight. For instance, carrying the weights away from the body, like holding a bucket, forces your core to engage more actively, which helps stabilize your spine and reduces injury risk. Another point that makes a huge difference is keeping the shoulders back and the nose forward. Without this, I noticed I would start to slump after a few reps, which placed unnecessary strain on my neck and upper back. Engaging the core has helped me maintain that upright posture throughout the exercise and has translated well to other lifting movements by strengthening my midsection. Challenging myself by gradually increasing weight up to around 75% of my body weight really pushed my limits, but it also accelerated my progress faster than lighter loads. Setting clear, measurable goals like this can keep motivation high. Additionally, the farmer's carry isn’t just good for strength; it also improves grip endurance significantly, which has positively impacted my performance in deadlifts and pull-ups. Whether you're an athlete or just looking to enhance everyday functional fitness, integrating farmer's carries into your regimen is a game changer. Just remember to prioritize good form over heavier weights to gain the best results safely.
