My # 1 must try food in Japan is actually a fruit! You must try the strawberries 🍓 when they’re in season from December to May and sometimes in November! They’re super special and green house grown. I couldn’t find them this time but my faves are Kumamoto strawberries 🤤

Having personally explored Japan during the strawberry season, I can attest that Japanese strawberries offer an extraordinary taste experience unlike any other. The moment you try one, you’ll notice the perfect balance of sweetness and a slight tartness that makes them so refreshing. What’s fascinating is how these strawberries are often grown in greenhouses, which allows producers to carefully control temperature and humidity to achieve an ideal ripeness and flavor profile. If you’re trying to find the best strawberries, Kumamoto strawberries are a standout favorite among locals and tourists alike. They tend to be larger with a vibrant red color and juicy texture, making them perfect for eating fresh or topping desserts like cakes. Visiting local markets or specialty stores like Don Quijote, as many travelers do, offers a great opportunity to sample different strawberry varieties. Just keep in mind that not all strawberries labeled as “Japan-grown” will have the authentic sweet flavor, so look for trusted sellers and ask about the source. Moreover, Japanese strawberry season can start as early as November and stretch into May, though the peak freshness is usually in mid-winter to early spring. This window makes strawberries a cherished seasonal treat during colder months. I also noted that as the season progresses, strawberries become sweeter and deeper in color. Eating the reddest, most mature strawberries often gives the richest flavor. For visitors to Japan, making a point to enjoy these strawberries is a unique way to experience local agriculture and culinary culture. Whether you’re enjoying them in casual roadside stalls, high-end patisseries, or specialty fruit stores, the joy of biting into a perfectly ripe Japanese strawberry is simply unforgettable. It’s also worth trying strawberry-based desserts and sweets to fully appreciate how integral this fruit is to Japanese seasonal cuisine. Overall, if you find yourself in Japan during strawberry season, make it a priority to taste these extraordinary fruits. Their distinctive flavor, coupled with the cultural significance of seasonal produce in Japan, creates a food experience that’s both delicious and memorable.
