Day 67 recap of this challenge!

It’s time to play the alto flute! The scales were A and Ab major, both in octaves. The main focus was on breathing and getting that high A and Ab to sound softer and less harsh. For the caprice study, I worked on the Chaconne. I tried that high A run just to see if the muscle memory from the smaller flute would transfer over. Yes, it did! But I still need more breath! The song is ‘Marry Go Round of Life’ from the movie ‘Howls Moving Castle’. #woodwinds #100dayschallange #coversong🎵 #woodwindsoftiktok #fluteplayersoftiktok

... Read moreContinuing my alto flute journey, it's fascinating how every day brings new insights, especially on Day 67 of this challenge. The alto flute, with its rich, mellow tone, is a truly special instrument, but it certainly presents its own set of unique challenges compared to a standard C flute. Many flutists, myself included, find that the shift requires a complete re-evaluation of breath support and embouchure. One of the biggest hurdles I've encountered, and something I focused on intensely today, is the sheer amount of air required. It's not just about pushing more air, but about controlling it efficiently. For those high A and Ab notes, getting them to sound soft and resonant, rather than harsh or airy, demands precise breath control from the diaphragm. I've found that practicing long tones, focusing on a steady, consistent air stream, has been incredibly helpful. Starting with a mezzo-forte volume and gradually decreasing to pianissimo, all while maintaining pitch and tone quality, really builds that control. It’s a slow process, but you can feel the muscles strengthening over time. Another aspect is the embouchure adjustment. What works perfectly for a C flute often needs slight modifications for the alto. The larger hole of the alto flute requires a more relaxed, open embouchure, and trying to force it can lead to tension and a constricted sound, especially in the upper register. I've been experimenting with relaxing my lips more and letting the air column do the work, rather than my facial muscles. This really helps in producing that characteristic warm, veiled sound of the alto flute, even on those challenging high notes. Regarding muscle memory, it's a curious thing. When I tried that high A run from the Chaconne, there was definitely a transfer of finger memory from my C flute. However, the air support and embouchure feel entirely different. It's almost like having to learn a new 'feel' for the same notes. This is where consistent daily practice, even just for 15-20 minutes, makes a huge difference. Each session reinforces the new muscle memory specific to the alto flute. Playing pieces like 'Marry Go Round of Life' from 'Howl's Moving Castle' on the alto flute is incredibly rewarding. The alto's darker timbre lends itself beautifully to the melancholic and magical quality of the piece. It’s not just about technical exercises; finding music that you genuinely love to play keeps the motivation high and makes the hard work feel worthwhile. If you're a flutist considering the alto flute, be prepared for a journey of discovery and patience. It's a different beast, but one that offers immense musical satisfaction once you get the hang of its unique demands.
