“Re”building a life as a widow in a new city

My name is Sharmane Fury. I am a podcaster (host of Militantly Mixed, BLERDcoMIXED, Matcha Malala & Murder, and Queer & Far) and sometimes cosplayer. In Nov 2023, my husband of nearly 24 years, Tristan, died suddenly and very unexpectedly from a blood clot in his leg. We had moved to Mexico and just starting to get settled into our new life abroad when it happened. In my grief, I was lucky to have amazing friends that took me and my cats in for a while year while I mourned in bed and eventually figured out what my next step was. I decided to move to Seattle to be closer to some of his family and some folks I’ve worked with in the “professionally Mixed” community. I’ve been here for 3 weeks now and not remotely settled yet but looking towards building a life with my cats as a solo person.

Yesterday, I got the keys to my first apartment as a solo at 47 years old. All my previous places in adulthood have been with Tristan. I want to say I’m excited but given the reason that I’ve had to move and the fact that every piece of furniture that is coming to my place is new, nothing from my life with Tristan, it’s hard to be excited. Cause we sold everything before moving to Mexico so now I’m not just moving forward, I’m having to build again. And that’s hard to get enthusiastic over.

That’s my story. The picture is of me eating my first “meal” in my new apartment.

For many, building a new life means going through a complex mix of emotions, from grief to anticipation of new beginnings. In Sharmane's case, her journey unfolds in Seattle, where she has to adjust to life without her husband and find joy in creating her new home. Establishing a support network becomes crucial. Sharmane highlights the importance of friends during her period of mourning and transition. These connections can serve as a lifeline for those in similar situations, reminding them that they're not alone in their struggles. New experiences, like getting the keys to her first solo apartment, can be bittersweet, filled with memories of the past yet abundant with opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Moreover, dealing with the logistics of starting over, such as purchasing new furniture and settling into a new community, is a critical part of this process. Many widows face these challenges and may feel a mix of excitement and sorrow, hoping for fulfillment while also grappling with loss. Resources like support groups or online communities can further help individuals navigate these changes, ensuring that they find guidance and connection as they step into this new chapter of life.
