... Read moreOkay, so let's be real – who hasn’t dealt with a drawer full of sad, stretched-out hair ties? It feels like no matter how many new ones I buy, they all eventually lose their elasticity and become useless. I used to just toss them, feeling wasteful, until I stumbled upon this super viral hack claiming you can fix stretched out hair ties just by placing them in *hot water*. My initial reaction was exactly what the original post said: 'No way this is real!' It sounded too good to be true, but my curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to put it to the test myself. I gathered a few of my most forlorn, saggy hair ties – you know the ones, they wrap around your ponytail about five times and still feel loose. I had a mix of those standard fabric-covered elastic ones and a few thicker scrunchies. According to the hack, all you need is *hot water*. So, I boiled a small pot of water, thinking the hotter, the better! Once it was boiling, I carefully dropped the stretched-out hair ties in. Now, the instructions I saw were a little vague on how long, so I started with about 30 seconds for the thinner ones and gave the scrunchies a full minute. What happened next genuinely shocked me! When I pulled them out, they looked... smaller. Not dramatically so, but noticeably tighter. I let them cool down completely on a towel, and when I picked them up, they felt almost brand new! The elastic had definitely regained a significant amount of its original snap. I tried them on, and they held my hair much more securely. It felt like I’d just saved myself from buying a whole new pack of hair ties. Why does this hot water trick work, you ask? Well, from what I've learned, it has to do with the material polymers in elastic. When heat is applied, it helps the polymers (the long chains of molecules that make up the elastic) to contract and return to their original, tighter form. It's like the elastic has a 'memory' and the heat helps it remember its shape! This works best with traditional elastic bands, especially those covered in fabric. Super thick, purely plastic or silicone ties might not show the same dramatic results. Based on my experiment, here are my top tips for making this hack work for you: Go Hot, Not Just Warm: Boiling water gave me the best results. Hot tap water might work for slightly stretched ties, but for really saggy ones, bring on the boil! Watch the Time: Don't leave them in too long, especially thinner ones. While I haven't had issues, theoretically, excessive heat could degrade the elastic over time. 30 seconds to a minute generally seems enough. Let Them Cool: Allow your hair ties to cool and dry completely before testing them. This gives the elastic time to fully set back into its new, tighter form. Not for Everything: This method is fantastic for elastic hair ties. If you have those spiral plastic ones that lose their shape, this trick might not be as effective for them, as their material properties are different. While the hot water hack is a game-changer, what if it doesn't quite do the trick for your specific type of hair tie, or if you want other options? I've also heard of people trying a hairdryer on a low-heat setting, slowly circling it around the stretched elastic. The principle is similar – applying heat to help the elastic contract. Just be very careful not to melt the material! Another preventive measure is simply to rotate your hair ties. Instead of using the same few favorites until they give out, switch them up daily to give them a rest and prolong their life. Also, try not to overstretch them in the first place, or use hair ties that are genuinely too small for your hair, forcing them to over-extend. Honestly, I was such a skeptic, but this hot water hack for fixing stretched out hair ties is now a staple in my routine. It's super simple, eco-friendly (hello, less waste!), and genuinely effective for most of my hair ties. Give it a try next time your favorite hairband starts feeling a little too loose – you might be as surprised as I was!
