Day 7 and I’m grateful for the ability to walk
When my heart was failing walking really wasn’t an option. Now that I can just wake up and go, I’m feeling really good
It's incredible how a simple shift in perspective can truly transform your entire day, and even your life. When I started my own '100 Days of Gratitude' journey, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect. Like many, I'd heard about the benefits, but it felt a little abstract. Now, just being able to share about 'Day 7' and the profound joy of walking again after my heart health scare, it really drives home the power of this practice. For anyone curious about what a '100 Days of Gratitude' journey entails, it's essentially a challenge to intentionally find and acknowledge things you're grateful for, every single day, for 100 days straight. It could be big things, like a major recovery, or small, everyday moments we often overlook. For me, it has truly been about noticing those 'small' miracles – like the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other, something I once took for granted. Before my heart issues, walking was just… walking. A mundane activity. But when my heart was failing, the very idea of a simple stroll felt like an impossible dream. Now, each morning, when I wake up and can simply 'go,' whether it's for a walk around the neighborhood or a peaceful hike at Papago Park with my furry best friend, it's a moment of pure, unadulterated thanks. It's not just about physical movement; it’s about the mental freedom and clarity it brings. That fresh air, the sights, the sounds – it all contributes to a sense of peace that is priceless. You might be wondering, 'How do I even start my own gratitude practice?' It's actually simpler than you think! Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way: Start Small: Don't feel pressured to write a long list every day. Even one thing counts. A warm cup of coffee, a sunny window, a kind word from a stranger – these are all valid. Keep a Journal: A dedicated gratitude journal can be a wonderful way to track your blessings. Looking back on previous entries can be a huge boost on tougher days. You might be surprised at how much you’ve accumulated! Use Prompts: Sometimes, it’s hard to think of something. Try prompts like: 'What made me smile today?', 'What physical ability am I grateful for?', 'Who made my day better?' Incorporate it into Routines: I try to think of something I’m grateful for during my morning walk, or before I go to bed. It helps set a positive tone for the day or reflect positively on it. Share Your Gratitude: Telling someone you appreciate them, or even sharing your gratitude journey on platforms like Lemon8, can amplify the positive feelings for both you and others. It builds a community of positivity! It’s easy to get caught up in life's challenges, and sometimes, those challenges can make it feel like 'objects in mirror are closer than they appear' – meaning, problems can seem overwhelming and right in front of us. But practicing gratitude helps us adjust our perspective, allowing us to see the good things that are also incredibly close, even if we hadn't noticed them before. It helps us focus on what we do have, rather than what we lack. This journey isn't just about feeling good; it’s about building resilience. On days when I'm tired or facing a new hurdle, remembering the joy of simply being able to walk, or the unconditional love from my dog, becomes my anchor. It reminds me that even after the toughest times, healing and happiness are possible. If you’re thinking of starting your own gratitude journey, I highly encourage it. Every step, every day, is an opportunity to find something truly special.
