Chicken Wontons

As a person who loves to cook and born in 1999, I was so ecstatic to come home and find the Southern Living Annual Recipes of 1999 sitting on my mama shelf. I had to have it! Here is my first attempt at a recipe from the book of chicken wontons with a hoisin peanut sauce. (They were amazing! 😋) I can’t wait to go through many more recipes and share with you all.

One of the best tips I learned was to make sure the wonton wrappers are moistened properly at the edges to seal in the filling and avoid oil leakage during frying. The hoisin peanut dipping sauce adds a wonderful balance of sweet, savory, and nutty flavors that perfectly complement the crispy wontons. I also found that using fresh ingredients like finely shredded cabbage, diced green onions, and chopped cilantro really elevates the texture and taste. For those looking to speed up the process, pre-cooked chicken works great, and you can easily customize the filling by adding other veggies or spices based on your preference. The sauce, made with hoisin sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, chicken broth, peanut butter, and brown sugar, is quick to whip up and can be stored in the fridge for several days, making this recipe ideal for entertaining or meal prepping. When frying, heating the oil to around 375°F ensures the wontons become perfectly golden and crispy without absorbing too much oil. Overall, this 1999 Southern Living recipe is a fantastic blend of flavors and conveniences, bringing a classic homemade touch to Asian-inspired appetizers. I recommend trying it with friends or family for a fun cooking experience and a delicious treat that’s sure to impress.
