What to do when it rains in Hawai’i

It’s been raining a lot the last few weeks here on O‘ahu so I’ve been looking for activities to do since the rain is pausing my usual outdoor activities. Here is a list of some of the things I do indoors when it rains:

- watch a sporting event (volleyball, basketball, etc)

- watch a live music at a local club like Blue Note Hawaii

- take an exercise class or go to the gym

- cook a new recipe

- have a paint and sip night

- explore a museum like Bishop Museum

- visit the Waikiki Aquarium

In fact, Hawai‘i offers a surprising variety of engaging indoor activities that allow you to make the most of your time despite the weather. For sports enthusiasts, attending a local sporting event like volleyball or basketball games is a great way to experience Hawai‘i’s vibrant sports culture indoors. Venues often have energetic crowds and provide an electric atmosphere that lifts your spirits. Music lovers should not miss catching a live show at Blue Note Hawaii, a renowned local music club known for live jazz, blues, and other genres. It’s a cozy spot to enjoy authentic Hawaiian vibes and great performances, perfect for a rainy evening. If you’re looking to stay active, many gyms and fitness centers on O‘ahu offer exercise classes ranging from yoga to high-intensity interval training. This is a fantastic way to maintain your fitness goals while staying dry. Cooking enthusiasts can use a rainy day to experiment with new recipes, incorporating fresh local Hawaiian ingredients that you might find at markets like those in Honolulu. Many visitors enjoy trying to prepare traditional dishes like poke or laulau as part of the cultural experience. For a creative twist, a paint and sip night is a fun, interactive activity where you can relax, create artwork, and enjoy some wine—ideal for groups or solo travelers seeking a unique experience. Culture seekers will appreciate visiting museums such as the Bishop Museum, which showcases Hawaiian history, science, and culture through extensive exhibits. Another great spot is the Waikiki Aquarium, where you can explore the diversity of marine life native to Hawai‘i’s waters even when the weather is gloomy. These indoor options ensure that your days in Hawai‘i remain enjoyable and memorable, regardless of the rain. Embracing local experiences and cultural venues during wet weather can enrich your visit and give you a deeper appreciation for the island’s vibrant community and traditions.
