Pickleball Fever!

I just recently discovered Pickleball!

Oh boy does it soothe my batminton playing childhood, i loved playing it. Especially at night in the chilly weather.

Pickleball is played with a somewhat smaller, table tennis type bat with a ball and the two opponents behind the net play each other. Play it indoors in summer to feel the thrill of it.

... Read moreOkay, so I just have to share about my latest obsession: Pickleball! You know how sometimes you stumble upon a new activity and it just clicks? That's exactly what happened to me. I've always loved racquet sports, especially badminton back in the day, but Pickleball feels like the perfect blend, and honestly, if you're someone who enjoys tennis but maybe wants something a little less intense or easier to pick up, you seriously need to give this a try. When I first heard of it, I was curious. People kept saying it was like a mix of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. And they weren't wrong! Instead of a stringed racquet, you use a solid paddle – mine is a sleek black paddle, though I've seen some cool wooden paddles too – to hit a plastic ball, often a bright yellow pickleball, over a net. The court is much smaller than a tennis court, which means less running around, but still a fantastic workout! I've played on both outdoor red courts and vibrant blue courts, and the vibe is always so energetic. What really makes it similar to tennis, but perhaps more approachable, is the strategy involved. You still have serves, volleys, and groundstrokes, but the underhand serve is easier to master, and the 'non-volley zone' or 'kitchen' near the net adds a whole new dimension to the game. My first few games, I found myself instinctively wanting to rush the net like in tennis, but quickly learned the rules about staying out of the kitchen for volleys. It’s a game of finesse and quick reflexes, not just raw power. I remember playing a match where my partner (who was wearing a cool blue long-sleeve shirt, while I was in my blue shirt and shorts) and I were down by a few points. We had to really focus on our dinks and soft shots to draw our opponents into the kitchen before hitting a winner. That feeling when you hit that perfect shot, watching the yellow pickleball sail over the net for a point, is just exhilarating! Getting started is surprisingly easy. All you really need is a paddle, some pickleballs, and a court. Many local community centers or parks are setting up dedicated pickleball courts, or you can even adapt a tennis court. Just make sure you have comfortable shoes to move around in. The community around Pickleball is incredibly welcoming, too. I've met so many friendly people on the courts, from seasoned players happy to offer tips to complete beginners just like I was. It's a sport that truly caters to all ages and skill levels. You can have intense competitive matches, or just a casual rally for fun. It's a brilliant way to stay active, especially during the summer, whether you're playing outdoors under the sun or even indoors when the weather isn't cooperating. If you're looking for a new sport that gives you that familiar tennis-like thrill without the steep learning curve, grab a paddle, find a court, and join the Pickleball craze. You won't regret it!
