A.P.P.L.E Bible Study Method

Here’s how I break down each letter and make it work for me: A - Attributes of God: This is where I pause and ask, “What does this passage reveal about who God is?” Is He loving, just, merciful, powerful, patient? For example, when I read about creation, I’m struck by His immense power and creativity. Or in stories of redemption, His boundless love and mercy shine through. Identifying these Attributes of God helps me understand His character better and builds my trust in Him. P - Promises of God: As I read, I actively look for any direct or implied promises. Sometimes it's a clear statement like, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Other times, it’s a promise embedded in a narrative, like God’s faithfulness to Abraham. I jot down what these Promises of God are and how they give me hope, assurance, or direction today. It’s comforting to know what I can lean on! P - Principles of Life: This letter is about finding universal truths that can guide my daily living. What moral or spiritual guideline is embedded in the text? How can this principle apply to my relationships, my work, or the decisions I’m facing this week? It’s about extracting timeless Principles of Life that transcend the original context and speak directly to my modern-day challenges. L - Lessons Learned: This isn't just about what the people in the Bible learned, but what *I* can learn from their experiences. What wisdom can I glean from their successes? What mistakes should I avoid? Are there specific Lessons Learned about areas like forgiveness, perseverance, or humility that I need to apply? It truly feels like God is giving me a personal coaching session through His Word! E - Example to Follow: Finally, I identify characters or actions that serve as an Example to Follow. Who are the heroes of faith whose obedience or courage I can emulate? Conversely, are there negative examples from which I can learn what not to do? This helps me visualize what living out God’s Word looks like in practical terms and how it can shape my own character. My Pro-Tips for Your A.P.P.L.E. Study: Don’t Overthink It: Not every passage will have all five letters clearly defined, and that’s perfectly fine! Focus on what stands out to you. Grab a Journal: I’ve found that physically writing down my thoughts for each letter makes it concrete, helps me remember, and allows me to track my spiritual growth over time. Pray First: Always ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and revelation before you begin. It makes a huge difference in opening your heart and mind to God's message. Start Small: Don't try to analyze an entire chapter at once. Even a few verses can yield incredible insight when you approach them with the A.P.P.L.E. method.
