Trying to sleep after acl reconstruction

2024/12/10 Edited to

... Read moreOh, the struggle is REAL when you're trying to catch some Z's after ACL reconstruction! Just like you, that 'POV: Trying to sleep a week after Post op' feeling is incredibly specific and truly sums up the early days. It felt like an impossible mission at times, especially with the brace restricting every move and the constant throbbing. I was a total "sleepy momma" but couldn't get any rest! For a long time, sleeping on my back was my only option. My surgeon and physical therapist emphasized keeping my leg elevated to reduce swelling and aid recovery. I found that stacking a few pillows *under my calf and heel*, ensuring my knee was straight but not hyperextended, made a huge difference. This elevation helped prevent fluid from pooling and eased some of the throbbing pain. A specialized wedge pillow became my best friend for keeping my leg perfectly positioned throughout the night. It felt restrictive, but it was the safest way to support my new ACL and get some much-needed rest. The big question everyone asks is, "Can I sleep on my side after ACL surgery?" I know I did! While early on it was a definite no-go, after getting the all-clear from my physical therapist (usually a few weeks post-op, but always check with yours!), I found a comfortable way. The key for me was to sleep on the unaffected side, with a pillow or two placed firmly between my knees, supporting the operated leg. This kept my knee from twisting or sagging and maintained proper alignment. Some days, feeling a bit more adventurous, I even tried sleeping on the operated side, but only with a huge body pillow hugging my injured leg, preventing any awkward bends or pressure points. It's all about careful positioning, experimenting with pillow support, and most importantly, listening to your body and your medical team's advice, especially once your brace is off or allowed to be. That knee brace can be a real pain, literally! Sleeping with a knee brace after ACL surgery is a challenge. I quickly learned that adjusting it properly before bed was crucial. Sometimes, loosening the straps just a tiny bit (without compromising stability) helped. Wearing soft, breathable pajamas or even a thin, silky sleeve under the brace also prevented skin irritation and chafing where it dug into my skin. For those restless nights, I even tried placing a thin, soft blanket carefully under the brace, especially at the edges. It's about finding these small comforts that don't jeopardize your recovery. Beyond positions and brace adjustments, managing pain before bed was essential for how to sleep comfortably after ACL surgery. Sticking to my pain medication schedule, and icing my knee for 20 minutes before trying to sleep, really helped quiet things down. I also made sure my bedroom was cool, dark, and quiet. Creating a calming routine, maybe reading a book or listening to gentle music, signaled to my body it was time to unwind, which was so important when my mind was racing with discomfort and anxiety about my healing. Remember, it truly does get better, as the original post's hashtag suggests! The first few weeks are the hardest, but with a bit of experimentation and these tips, finding a comfortable sleeping position after ACL surgery becomes manageable. Don't be afraid to try different pillow configurations or talk to your physical therapist for personalized advice. Wishing you restful nights on your recovery journey!
