Long Drive Through the Desert

The road unspools beneath us,

a ribbon of heat and hush,

the desert stretching wide like a secret it wants us to keep.

The sun melts into the horizon,

painting your skin in gold,

and the sky leans low as if it wants to listen

to the way you breathe beside me.

Wind slips through the cracked window,

warm, wandering, curious

and you rest your hand on my thigh,

steady, claiming, soft enough to make the whole world slow down.

We drive through miles of quiet,

where the sand glows like embers

and the air tastes like something ancient.

You glance at me

that little sassy smirk in your eyes

and I swear the desert blushes for you.

Night rises like a velvet curtain,

stars flickering awake one by one,

and we pull over just to feel the silence wrap around us.

You step out, lean against the hood,

and tell me to come closer.

I do.

The sky is endless,

but your gaze is louder than the constellations.

You kiss me slow

a sunrise in reverse

and the desert wind carries the warmth of it across my skin.

The road may be long,

may be short,

may be bumpy,

may be smooth,

but with you, every mile feels like a promise.

And when you laugh,

that low, warm, playful sound,

I know exactly what I’m going to do with you:

keep driving

until the stars run out of breath.
