you’ll never understand this level of stress😭

It was one of those shifts where everything went wrong.

We were short-staffed, the fryer broke, and orders were piling up faster than we could bag them.

My manager was stressed, customers were impatient, and the kitchen felt like it was 100 degrees.

Then this man comes to the counter furious that his burger didn’t have extra pickles.

He slammed it down, raised his voice, and said I was “too slow.”

I apologized, fixed it, smiled and the second he turned around, I felt tears in my eyes.

I walked into the freezer, just for a minute, to breathe.

My hands were shaking. Not because of the burger but because I was so tired of pretending it doesn’t hurt.

People think food service is just “taking orders.”

It’s not. It’s learning how to stay polite when you’re overwhelmed, tired, and holding back tears behind that fake smile.

If you’ve ever worked in this industry, you know it’s not the job that breaks you, it’s how people treat you.

What’s the worst customer moment you’ve ever had on shift?

... Read moreWorking in food service often involves much more than just taking orders and serving food; it’s a demanding environment that requires emotional resilience and quick thinking. Many workers experience moments like having to deal with a broken fryer while orders pile up, a hot and chaotic kitchen, and impatient customers, all contributing to overwhelming stress. One common source of emotional strain is difficult customer interactions. When a customer yells or shows anger—like shouting over missing extra pickles—it can deeply affect an employee’s morale. This stress is compounded when the worker has to maintain politeness and a friendly demeanor despite feeling a flood of emotions such as frustration, exhaustion, or sadness. It’s crucial to recognize that food service employees often endure these pressures silently, hiding their pain behind smiles to keep the environment professional. The feeling of having to “pretend it doesn’t hurt” is a reality for many in this sector. This emotional labor can lead to moments where workers need a brief escape—such as stepping into a freezer to take a deep breath and regain composure. Understanding the human cost behind quick service can foster more empathy from customers, who sometimes don’t realize the sheer workload and emotional toll on service staff. Sharing stories from the frontline helps shed light on the invisible challenges employees face and promotes patience and kindness in hectic situations. For those currently working in or considering food service, knowing these realities can prepare you for the psychological demands and help develop coping mechanisms such as taking short breaks when possible, talking to supportive coworkers or supervisors, and practicing self-care outside of work. Supporting food service workers by treating them respectfully and understanding their stressful conditions can improve the entire work atmosphere, reduce burnout, and enhance customer satisfaction. This community is essential for millions and deserves recognition and appreciation for their hard work under pressure.
