Hosting our first Christmas

bought our first house this year and decided to host Christmas for the first time! Excited, right? We invited both our families my parents (I’m an only child) and his mom plus siblings. Since everyone’s from different cities and barely knows each other, we thought White Elephant would be the perfect way to avoid awkwardness.

Everything seemed fine… until my sister-in-law freaked out. She insisted we must do Secret Santa because it’s “their family tradition.” I get it started as a way to keep things affordable, but we’re hosting this year, so it just makes sense for us to pick the game.

We offered a compromise: they can do Secret Santa among themselves if they want, but not in our house while we’re hosting. That way, nobody’s left out or watching awkwardly. She’s still pushing back like our choice is disrespectful.

Honestly, we just wanted a fun, stress-free exchange without anyone feeling left out. Does hosting really mean you can’t make the rules?

... Read moreHosting your first Christmas with family coming from different cities can definitely bring a mix of excitement and unexpected challenges. One common point of contention is the choice of gift exchange games. The debate between Secret Santa and White Elephant is something many families face during the holidays. Secret Santa typically involves each participant being assigned one person to buy a gift for, which can help keep costs low and gifts personalized. On the other hand, White Elephant is a fun, often humorous gift exchange where participants can ‘steal’ gifts from each other, adding a light-hearted and social element to the celebration. Understanding why some family members might prefer Secret Santa is important, especially if it’s rooted in a longstanding tradition meant to keep things simple and affordable. However, as the host, setting the tone and choosing a format that encourages everyone to feel included and reduces stress is also crucial. Offering compromises like allowing a smaller group to carry out their own tradition separately can be a thoughtful way to respect those wishes without disrupting the overall hosting plans. Many people find that clear communication before the celebration helps manage expectations and avoid misunderstandings. Explaining why you chose White Elephant can show your intention to foster fun and engagement among guests who may not know each other well. Remember, hosting does give you some authority over the event setup, but balancing respect for family traditions while maintaining your vision is key to a joyful holiday. The phrase from the image, "Why Is Family Christmas So Complicated?", truly encapsulates how complex family dynamics often surface during the holidays. Differences in traditions, personalities, and expectations can create tension. Keeping a focus on mutual respect, humor, and togetherness usually helps in smoothing those bumps. If you find yourself in a similar situation, try to prioritize open communication and empathy. This holiday season is about bringing loved ones together and creating new shared memories, even if it means gently navigating through some disagreements. Hosting your first Christmas is an opportunity not only to celebrate but also to lay the groundwork for new family traditions that everyone can enjoy in years to come.
