14 Years of Friendship, But I Can’t Trust Her
We’ve been friends for 14 years, since sixth grade. We live close, hang out most weekends, and aside from one major issue, it’s been a great friendship.
I have severe food allergies—sesame and nuts. One bite, and it could send me to the ER. Sounds simple enough to remember, right? Wrong. After 14 years, my friend still can’t seem to remember that I cannot eat these foods.
She’s big on healthy eating and loves vegan and East Asian-inspired foods—basically, a nightmare for someone with my allergies. She’s literally seen me hospitalized once from eating something with sesame. Every weekend, she suggests restaurants I can’t eat at, and every time I remind her, she forgets or ignores it. If we cook together, she’ll pull out sesame oil or almond extract, and I’m always on high alert catching it before it goes in. It’s exhausting.
She remembers everything else about me—my pets, my family, my hobbies—but somehow my allergies don’t stick. I’ve tried explaining how serious it is, but it’s like it never clicks.
I feel like I’m constantly on guard, and honestly, I’m considering cutting ties. Is it too harsh to say I can’t hang out anymore if she can’t take this seriously?
