Wish She’d Done This

When I think back to my first period, I honestly wish my mom had made it feel a little less scary and awkward. I wish she had talked to me beforehand about what to expect, instead of reacting like something was wrong. A calm explanation would’ve gone such a long way. Even a little “starter kit” with pads, wipes, pain meds, and underwear would’ve made me feel prepared instead of totally overwhelmed. And I wish she hadn’t whispered about it or acted embarrassed — that part made me feel like my body was something to hide.

More than anything, I wish she had checked in on me and made it feel normal. Just a simple “Are you okay?” or “Do you need anything?” would’ve made that whole experience so much gentler. Mostly, I wish it had been treated as a moment of care instead of something confusing and shameful.

What about you what do you wish your mom had done when you got your first period?

... Read moreMany teenagers face their first period feeling unprepared, scared, or even ashamed—often because the subject is treated as taboo or embarrassing. From the OCR content and personal stories shared, it's clear that a little preparation and open communication can make all the difference in turning this milestone into a positive experience. A thoughtful "starter kit" including pads, wipes, and pain medication can provide a sense of control and readiness. This practical support communicates care and helps ease anxiety. Beyond supplies, sharing calm, honest information about what to expect physically and emotionally demystifies the process and reduces fear. It’s just as important that this conversation happens without shame or secrecy. Whispering or acting embarrassed can unintentionally suggest that menstruation is something to hide, which can harm self-esteem and body confidence during a critical developmental stage. Moreover, a simple check-in like "Are you okay?" or "Do you need anything?" after the first period signals ongoing support and normalizes this natural bodily function as part of growing up. This approach shifts the narrative from confusion and embarrassment to care and understanding. Encouraging more open dialogue about menstruation within families fosters healthier attitudes in young girls. It empowers them to embrace their bodies with confidence, helping dismantle lingering cultural stigmas. As more people share their experiences through platforms like #AskLemon8 and #GirlhoodStories, we can create a kinder, more informed community where girls feel safe and supported through all aspects of growing up.
