Wish She’d Done This
When I think back to my first period, I honestly wish my mom had made it feel a little less scary and awkward. I wish she had talked to me beforehand about what to expect, instead of reacting like something was wrong. A calm explanation would’ve gone such a long way. Even a little “starter kit” with pads, wipes, pain meds, and underwear would’ve made me feel prepared instead of totally overwhelmed. And I wish she hadn’t whispered about it or acted embarrassed — that part made me feel like my body was something to hide.
More than anything, I wish she had checked in on me and made it feel normal. Just a simple “Are you okay?” or “Do you need anything?” would’ve made that whole experience so much gentler. Mostly, I wish it had been treated as a moment of care instead of something confusing and shameful.
What about you what do you wish your mom had done when you got your first period?
