HOFAS: Everything you wanted or disappointment?
While House of Earth and Blood (or Crescent City!) is one of my favorite books, I’m sad to say House of Flame and Shadow left me dissatisfied and disappointed.
This series started so strongly and to me felt like it slowly got lost in itself as it went on. By the end I was just wanting it to be over. I can’t even imagine how hard it would be to write a fantasy book let alone a series, but I think it just tried to do too much especially with the connections it tried to make.
Let me know your thoughts on it though! Even if you didn’t like the book overall, did you have favorite moments, scenes or characters?

When diving into a highly anticipated book like Sarah J. Maas’s *House of Flame and Shadow*, there’s a certain ritual many of us book lovers follow. We prepare our favorite reading nook, perhaps with a soft blanket, the perfect lighting, and, for many, a warm beverage. For me, creating that ideal 'cozy coffee scene' is almost as important as the story itself. It’s about setting the stage for an immersive experience, especially when you’re hoping for a story to sweep you away. I often find myself arranging my space with care before picking up a new SJM novel. Imagine a peaceful setup: House of Flame and Shadow resting on a polished *wooden surface*, next to a steaming *white coffee mug*. Maybe there’s a small vase filled with delicate *white daisies and baby's breath*, adding a touch of calm to the anticipation of a fantastical world. This cozy scene is meant to enhance the magic, to make the hours spent lost in pages feel truly special. However, as much as I tried to cultivate that perfect reading ambiance for HOFAS, my personal experience, much like the original post, left me feeling a bit... disappointed. It makes you wonder, can even the most comforting coffee scene truly salvage a story that doesn't quite hit the mark? While I adored the earlier Crescent City books, especially *House of Earth and Blood*, this third installment felt overwhelming. It's tough when you're yearning for that familiar thrill, but the narrative seems to lose its way, trying to connect too many threads at once. Despite the story's complexities and my own frustration, those quiet moments with my coffee mug in hand did offer a small solace. There's something inherently comforting about the ritual, even if the plot twists aren't quite landing. It's a space for reflection, a moment to process the intricate world building and character arcs, or perhaps, in this case, to ponder where the story might have gone astray. So, while HOFAS might not have delivered everything I hoped for, my dedicated cozy coffee scene became a sanctuary. It’s where I could quietly absorb the narrative, even if it meant feeling a bit let down. It reinforces the idea that sometimes, the joy of reading isn't just about the words on the page, but the entire sensory experience we build around it. Did you also craft a special reading nook for HOFAS? How did your own 'shadows house coffee scene' enhance or perhaps contrast with your feelings about the book? I'd love to hear how your reading rituals played out with this one.

This book was so disappointing! It started off great but went downhill so fast after Hunt and Ruhn got rescued. 😭
