Having read 'Code of Silence' by Shantel Tessier, I found the book explores the intense and often brutal dynamics within the mafia world, where loyalty and silence are paramount. The story delves into complex character relationships and the challenges of navigating power and secrecy. Despite my overall rating of 3/10 due to pacing issues and a rushed plot, especially in the latter parts, certain elements stood out and kept me engaged. The themes of control and survival resonated strongly, highlighting how deeply binding mafia loyalties can be and illustrating the harsh consequences of betrayal. I appreciated passages like, "Never let anyone stand in your way, son. Not even fucking blood. They'll be the first to undercut you, and they should be the first to die for it," which showcase the ruthless mindset necessary in this world. Moreover, the romantic elements added a humanizing layer to the story, with the protective nature of the characters illuminating their vulnerabilities beneath the tough exterior. From a reader's perspective, especially someone interested in dark romance or mafia-themed narratives, it’s important that the story maintains a balance between action, character development, and plot coherence. Unfortunately, the uneven pacing detracted from my overall enjoyment. The story seemed slow to build at first and then hurried through crucial developments towards the end, which can leave readers feeling rushed or disconnected. That said, moving forward to the next book in 'The Dark Kingdom' series may resolve these issues, as sequels often expand on plot threads and deepen character arcs. For fans of the mafia romance genre, themes like secrecy, forbidden connections, and navigating dangerous alliances are compelling hooks that may warrant continuing with the series. In my experience, dark romance novels like this can benefit greatly from detailed world-building and consistent pacing to sustain tension and emotional investment. While 'Code of Silence' has a foundation of intriguing concepts, stronger narrative development could make it a more satisfying read. I look forward to seeing how the series evolves and whether the next installment can deliver a more compelling and immersive experience.
