... Read moreHey everyone! Seeing my hair dye disaster makes me want to share some tips I've learned (often the hard way!) about coloring hair blue, so hopefully, you can avoid some pitfalls. Getting that vibrant, bright blue, especially on dark hair, is definitely a process, and good prep is half the battle.
First off, bleaching is crucial – you can't skip this step if you want true blue, not a muddy green. For dark hair, you'll likely need to lift your hair to a pale yellow, almost white, inside of a banana peel color. This often requires multiple bleaching sessions, not just one. Make sure your hair is healthy enough to handle it! Always do a strand test and a patch test first. I've found using a good quality bleach kit, sometimes with a bond builder like Olaplex, really helps minimize damage. And NEVER overlap bleach onto previously bleached hair – that's how you get breakage and splotchy results. Getting an even lift is key to avoiding those faded greenish-blue sections later.
Once you've got your canvas, choosing the blue dye is the fun part! There are so many amazing brands out there. Brands like Manic Panic (which I see someone mentioned in the hashtags!), Arctic Fox, and Lunar Tides are cult favorites for a reason. They offer a huge range of blues, from deep navy to electric sapphire. If you're aiming for a super bright, vibrant blue, sometimes mixing a tiny bit of purple into your blue dye can help counteract any yellow tones left in your hair, making the blue appear truer and less prone to turning green.
For specific techniques like split-dyed hair, precision is everything! Section your hair clearly and use foils or a barrier cream to prevent colors from bleeding into each other. Apply the dye evenly, saturating every strand. Don't rush it! Leaving the dye on for the recommended time (or sometimes longer, with semi-permanents, as they are conditioning) can really help with color saturation and longevity.
Finally, maintenance! Blue unfortunately fades fast. Wash your hair in cool water, use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, and try to limit washing. Dry shampoo is your best friend! Also, using a color-depositing conditioner once a week can really help keep that vibrant blue alive between full dye jobs. If you notice it starting to turn greenish, a purple toning shampoo or a quick blue refresh can sometimes save the day.
It's all about patience and good technique. Don't be afraid to ask for help from a professional if you're unsure, especially with bleaching. Happy dyeing, and I hope you achieve your dream blue hair!
