Natural labor prep! 🌿

If you’re hoping to have an unmedicated birth, here’s a few of the main things I’m doing to prepare!

1. Reading the Bradley method book! So many women have recommended it to me including my mom who had 3 great unmedicated births using this method. Hoping I can follow in her footsteps! It’s all about relaxing and working with your body. I love how simple it is. (I wish I could have taken a Bradley birth class but there weren’t any near me, you can look into it! I recommend looking into the Bradley class specifically during your 2nd trimester bc I think it’s a 12 week commitment).

2. Doula! We hired a doula to help coach me and my husband during labor with labor positions, and ways to keep labor progressing. As well as help advocate for my birth plan. We’ve met 3 times and it has been like having a personal birth class tailored to me! (I also chose a hospital & OBGYN that has midwives, this is super helpful)

3. Drinking raspberry leaf tea! Most of the time I mix it with pineapple and cranberry juice. All of which are thought to be helpful in softening the cervix and preparing for labor :)

4. Eating dates! Another cervix softening trick that many recommend! If you don’t like the taste of dates alone (it’s not terrible, but not amazing to me) you can cover it with peanut butter and chocolate or throw them in a smoothie! They say eat 4-6 a day near the end of pregnancy.

5. Birth ball routine! The ball has been my go to since 2nd trimester to help with hip mobility, and I’m now using it to make room in the pelvis to get baby in a good position for birth.

I’ve also been going to the prenatal chiropractor since 32 weeks & this has aligned my pelvis and taken away my lower back pain. Im also walking as much as I can, and about to start doing the miles circuit to start labor soon!

The main thing I’ve learned is it’s all about mindset. You have to do your research and really know your WHY if you want to go natural. Relaxing and surrendering to contractions is key. Surround yourself with positive natural birth stories. And above all, believe that your body was made to do this!

And if you want a documentary recommendation for your research, let me know!

*no shame if you want a medicated birth, or can’t go natural. But if you can and want to do natural- I hope it’s helpful that I share my prep experience! And if something goes wrong, I’m in a hospital and can get help. I’m planning but keeping my hands open.

... Read morePreparing for natural labor involves several holistic approaches that can enhance your birthing experience. One key recommendation is to educate yourself through literature such as the Bradley method, which emphasizes relaxation and body awareness to ease the process. Additionally, engaging a doula can provide personalized support, helping partners navigate labor stages and advocate for birth plans effectively. Natural remedies become beneficial tools in this journey; for instance, raspberry leaf tea is renowned for its potential to strengthen the uterine muscles and promote cervical softening. Meanwhile, incorporating dates into your diet can further assist in preparing your body for labor. A common suggestion is to eat about 4-6 dates daily in the weeks leading up to your due date. Utilizing a birth ball for exercises enhances hip mobility, and regular visits to a prenatal chiropractor can help ensure pelvic alignment, which plays a vital role in creating space for the baby during labor. Walking and light exercises can also help in managing discomfort and maintaining stamina. Overall, mindset is crucial: fostering positivity, understanding your motivations, and embracing your body's natural capabilities can make a significant difference in how you prepare for and experience childbirth. Surrounding yourself with supportive communities and inspiring stories not only provides encouragement but can also help in reshaping your thoughts about a natural labor experience.
