Timelapse video of a monarch caterpillar forming it’s chrysalis. Original time is 54 minutes.
Witnessing the metamorphosis of a monarch caterpillar into a chrysalis is truly a remarkable experience. In my personal observations, the process begins with the caterpillar finding a secure place to hang, often attaching itself to a leaf or branch with silk. The caterpillar then gradually forms a J-shape before shedding its outer skin to reveal the chrysalis beneath. Over the course of about an hour, as this timelapse captures, the chrysalis hardens and changes color from a soft green to a more translucent appearance, signaling the transformation inside. This stage is critical, as the caterpillar’s body reorganizes into the adult butterfly’s form. For those who enjoy butterfly gardening or nature observation, providing milkweed plants— the monarch caterpillar's sole food source— encourages these amazing creatures to thrive near your home. Observing this process up close offers a unique window into one of nature's most fascinating biological phenomena and provides a deeper appreciation of the life cycle and vulnerability of monarch butterflies.
